What to Make of Free Beethovens?

The BBC recently offered free downloads of several Beethoven symphonies, and almost 1.4 million copies were downloaded. Is the online world an answer to dwindling classical CDs sales, where a successful CD sells a couple of thousand copies? Will this allow less-known composers to garner more exposure?
