WHAT IS IMAGINATION?

What is imagination? Is it some divorce from reality, a fantasy land created by some artist?

I think it's simpler than that. Imagination is the ability to imagine something in detail before it exists. Any carpenter does this when he builds a deck, and counts the imaginary struts before they actually exist.

Any executive does this when he/she makes a decision which affects other people, and the implementation and consequences of that decision are imagined in detail, from the standpoint of others, before the decision is made. This might end up modifying the decision itself.

So imagination is not some esoteric thing reserved only for artists or novelists; ideally. it should be a part of everyday life, all around us.

That's what this world needs right now: imagination.
