Aural Advent: Day 12
In our corner of the universe, the source is sacred. Urtext, period bands, hours of score study and research to determine the difference between a Mahler and Beethoven fortissimo – all are in aid of trying to divine the intentions of someone who has been dead long enough to be without living contemporaries.
While the comparison falls down in several areas Miss Mussel is going to ignore for the present moment, pop and jazz operate in a paradigm where what you do with the source material is more important. Case in point: Happy Holidays. Written for the 1946 Bing Crosby film Holiday Inn, the song is rather forgettable as a stand-alone number. In the hands of Beef Wellington, it is transformed into this lovely little toe-tapper.
